HOW TO: Self-Love

Self-love can be expressed in many ways. You may wish to light some scented candles and sit in the bath, read a good book whilst enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee, treat yourself to a shopping trip, attend that all relaxing yoga class or go for a spa day.

This all sounds lovely. However, self-love doesn’t just take the form of pampering yourself.

There is a thought process that needs to be addressed internally and externally. You need to tackle those issues that are constantly on your mind, you need to learn to manage those inner demons and keep them in check. You need to be able to look into a mirror without spending the whole time criticising everything you see, wishing you were someone else or looking at all the parts you want to change about your body. You must be able to accept a compliment and not bat it away with a negative comment.

We may judge other people, other people may judge us, but we are our own worst critics. Whilst this is very easy to write down, the reality is for most of us loving yourself is hard work.

Remember change is good – embrace yourself with open arms. We have put together some tips to help you along the way:

Be Open

Bottling up your emotions and telling people you are ‘OK’ when clearly you are not is taking you on the road to nowhere. Whether they are deep rooted or there’s simply not enough hours in the day to deal with everything, don’t be afraid to express yourself. By talking to others, you will not feel isolated – everyone else is struggling with their own issues so sharing your story will only make others feel like they are not alone.

You Are A Survivor!

Some days you will be completely in control. You know what you’re doing where and when, you are completely organised and feel like you have your shit together.

Other days you will struggle with those inner demons. You are completely frustrated but unable to express yourself in words. You feel like you are drowning and losing control.

If you remain in that low place, just make sure you take the time to deal with it. You can fight the good fight and push through. Tomorrow is a new day.


Reflecting on your mistakes can help you forgive and forget. If you have made some poor choices in the past do no get hung up on this. You need to forgive yourself to move forward. Loving yourself despite any mistakes is great for your self-worth. Have no regrets.

Remember What You Have Accomplished

Creating a list of what you have achieved is a great way to fall in love with yourself. This makes you feel good about yourself. Find happiness from what you have accomplished. We can sometimes focus on the negatives and forget about the positives, so this is a great way to remind yourself of what you have achieved.

Create That Vision

Visualizing your goals is so important. Making a vision board is a great way to remind yourself why you are doing what you’re doing. Whether this be print-outs stuck on the fridge, or you have a whole wall dedicated to what you are working towards, it certainly gives you the opportunity to focus on your dreams.

Always remember to love your life and love yourself!
