Tips: how to handle going back to work

It’s the time of year people dread the most. The return to work after the festive period. Even now the thought of setting the alarm looms large in our mind. So, to help we have compiled a quick guide as to how best to handle the return to work.

1 – Positive Mental Attitude. Sounds silly but be positive about the return. Focus on what you enjoy about your work be it the social interaction, the sense of accomplishment you derive from completing tasks, making sales and hitting targets. It’s all too easy to single out negatives about any job but if you train your brain to focus on positives and ignore any drawbacks this will help you ease back into your working world.

2 – Prioritising your work load. Inevitably when you return there will be a pile of work needing your attention or an email inbox that will make you want to switch the screen off. How can you manage this? Well no one knows your job better than you. You know what needs doing first, you know what is the most important task, you know what has the biggest impact on your business. Assess your workload upon your return and prioritise accordingly.

3 – Goals and Targets. Going forward what are your plans? Set clear goals for the short term and long term. It’s important to know what you are working towards. If you are looking to expand your client base how are you going to achieve this? If you are looking to increase revenue from existing customers, what are you going to do to make this happen? Have a time frame in mind and at the end of this time assess how you have performed.

4 – Meetings. It’s a good idea to meet with your colleagues. Arrange meetings with your line manager (if you have one) and those you manage. Set out the aims and goals for the coming year whether they are long term or short term. This will help ensure that everyone is on the same page and can help people resolve queries going forward enabling efficient working patterns.

5 – Make time for yourself. Remember to take time for yourself at the start of each day. This is so important for your own mindset. Doing this will help reduce stress and burnout. You can’t give away something you don’t have, so make sure you make time for you.
